Panasonic PV-GS39 MiniDV CamcorderStrengths: compact design, excellent video quality , 30X optical zoom, quality widescreen LCD Weakness: Optional extended life battery is pricey This good lokking compact camcorder produces excellent movies. The LCD is crisp while shooting, while the viewfinder less so. The 30X optical zoom is nice to have. For extended shooting, one can purchase the optional battery pack that's quite expensive. Almost $100.

I purchased this camcorder to video my stand-up acts in comedy clubs that of course that are dim and very little light but the stage. I get great video and the playback is fantastic. It's so light and the buttons are close to your thumb for ease of use. I highly recommend this for beginners and pros.
