Sony TRV 280 Digital 8 camcorder

Strengths: Great picture

Weakness: none that I have found

We were disappointed that this camera would not play our analog tapes from our old sony 8mm camera. That was one of the reasons we purchased this new camera. However, it is our lack of understanding technology.
This camera is small and allows you to transfer to the computer.

Sony Handycam DCR-TRV280

Strengths: Ease of use, digital recording on Hi 8mm tapes, 20X optical zoom

Weakness: Unable to read analog 8mm tapes

This is our second Sony Handycam camcorder. Our original one, bought in 1998, was recently stolen. I decided to replace it with a new Handycam, hoping to get the latest video features and the ability to play back our older tapes. Unfortunately, this model does not read analog 8mm tapes. It does, however, record digital video on 8mm, which is cost-effective if you have a stash of older tapes.
If you are an amateur home videographer, you will find the picture and sound quality excellent. The ability to play and edit digital video on your PC is a wonderful feature. This camcorder offers great value for your money.

Sony DCR-TRV280 Handycam Camcorder

Strengths: It was great to setup, bright LCD screen and the options seemed clear. It really helps to read the manual, but most features are easy to use.

Weakness: The charging location and cover are a bit cumbersome, and the first time that you put a tape in the camcorder it seems a bit awkward.

I found the camcorder to be easy to use, the battery charges fast and seems to last an adequate amount of time. I have tried others that are larger and smaller and this seems just about the right size to make it feel like you are holding a camcorder and not just a still camera. I kind of wish that it had a way to capture images other than by tape but the resolution of the still camera feature is so low I probably would not use it anyway. Overall a good camcorder.

I went on vacation over the 4th of July and rented the Sony
Digital 8 from Rent a Center and was really impressed by how easy it was to use the camera. I agree about the stills
I thought they would be stored seprately but they where not. Also the only other comlplaint that I have is the focus lens....when I started to take spontanious pictures the beginning few seconds where out of focus. This kind of bothers me a bit. Other than that this is a great camera and at the end of September I will own one.

Great Camcorder for a First Time User

Strengths: This camcorder is very easy to use, especially for a first time user. With EASY button, the camcorder records and adjusts everything automatically.

Weakness: The price is on upper average range, compare to the other brands. We could find cheaper product with comparable features.

DCR-TRV280 is a great camcorder, especially for a first time user. The EASY button feature helps to record movies easily. SONY is the manufacturer and is the brand that I trust. Moreover, the battery charges really fast. I would recommend everyone to buy this product.

Quick Review Camcorders: Sony DCR-TRV280

At this point, the only people buying Digital8 camcorders over MiniDV must be doing so by choice. They may have been the cheaper option at one time, but now that the under-$300 barrier has been cracked by digital cameras, dinosaurs like the Sony DCR-TRV280 will become increasingly difficult to find.

Sony DCR-TRV280 Camcorder Review

The DCR-TRV280 is this year’s low-end addition to the Sony Digital8 series. What it lacks in manual control options it makes up for in price, and what it lacks in chic packaging it compensates for in ease of use. It’s the only Sony model that does not feature a touch screen LCD; instead control functions are dispersed atop the massive frame–to the user’s ultimate benefit. The camcorder...
